Alarm That Skips Bank Holidays (UK): No More Christmas Day Wake-Ups

October 14, 2026 · ShiftAlarm team

It's 6 AM on Boxing Day. Your iPhone alarm is blaring. You don't work. You were planning to lie in with a cup of tea and the Queen's Speech. But your alarm doesn't know it's a bank holiday — it only knows it's a Monday. This has happened to every UK shift worker at least once. Here's the permanent fix.

Why the built-in iPhone alarm can't skip bank holidays

The Clock app's repeat rules work on day of week (every Monday, every weekday). UK bank holidays also fall on weekdays. The built-in alarm has no connection to any holiday calendar, so it fires on bank holidays just like any other Monday or Friday.

2026 & 2027 UK bank holidays you might miss (and your alarm won't)

These are the ones most likely to catch shift workers off guard — weekdays that are actually days off:

Scotland and Northern Ireland have slightly different dates — ShiftAlarm picks the right one for your region.

Option 1: Manually skip each bank holiday (bad idea)

You can open the Clock app and turn off your alarm the night before each bank holiday. Works for the main ones. But substitute days (when a holiday falls on a weekend and gets moved to a nearby weekday) are the sneaky ones — Monday 28 December 2026 looks like a normal Monday. Most people forget those until the alarm goes off.

Option 2: Let the alarm skip bank holidays automatically

The fix is an alarm app that connects to the UK bank holiday calendar. ShiftAlarm pulls from the official GOV.UK public holidays JSON and marks every bank holiday — including substitute days — as a quiet day. Here's the setup:

Step 1: Install and set your region

Download ShiftAlarm from the App Store. Open the Calendar view, tap the region selector, and choose United Kingdom. That's the one-time setup for holiday data.

Step 2: Create your alarm

Set up your regular weekday alarm, or a 4-on-2-off rotation, or a DuPont/Pitman schedule — whatever your work pattern is.

Step 3: Toggle on Adapt to calendar

This is the magic switch. Under More options, turn on Adapt to calendar. From that moment forward, the alarm checks every scheduled firing day against the UK bank holiday list. If it's a bank holiday, the alarm stays quiet.

Step 4: Save and forget it

No more checking the calendar the night before. No more waking up on Christmas Day to silence an alarm you set last Monday. No more missed days off because a substitute holiday slipped past you.

Data source: ShiftAlarm uses the official GOV.UK public holidays JSON, which covers England & Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland with their respective holiday dates and substitute arrangements. It updates automatically when the government publishes holiday calendars for future years.

Does it work with any shift rotation?

Yes. Whether you work a standard 9–5 week, a 4-on-2-off pattern, or a complex DuPont rotation (28 days, day/night mix), the holiday skip rule is applied on top of whatever your rotation says. The logic is simple: if the schedule says work AND it's not a bank holiday, alarm fires.

FAQ

What if I work on bank holidays?

Edit the specific bank holiday in ShiftAlarm's calendar and mark it as a working day for that year. The alarm will fire normally on that one day and resume holiday-skipping afterward.

What about Scotland vs England holidays?

Choose your region (England & Wales, Scotland, or Northern Ireland) and the app uses the correct list — Scotland has New Year's Day as a two-day holiday and gets Saint Andrew's Day, for example.

Will this drain my battery?

No. The holiday data is pulled once when you set your region. No background checks, no network activity beyond the initial fetch.

Never wake up on a bank holiday again.

One toggle. All UK bank holidays. Forever.
