4-on-2-off Alarm Setup: One Alarm for Your Entire Rotation
If you work a 4-on-2-off rotation, you know the weekly ritual: toggle the alarm on Sunday morning, off Thursday night, on Friday morning, off Saturday. One slip, one missed shift. This guide shows how to replace all that with a single alarm that follows your schedule automatically — and even skips public holidays.
What is 4-on-2-off?
The 4-on-2-off rotation is one of the most common shift patterns in manufacturing, healthcare, warehousing, and security. You work four consecutive days, get two days off, repeat. It's simple in concept — but the built-in iPhone alarm has no idea it exists.
Why the built-in alarm fails here: The Clock app works on "day of week" (every Monday, Tuesday, etc.), not "position in rotation." Your rotation doesn't care what day it is — it cares whether today is day 1, day 2, day 3, day 4 (on), or day 5, day 6 (off).
Option 1: The "7 alarms" workaround (why it's bad)
Some people try setting seven individual alarms, one for each possible day of the week. The rotation shifts by one day each week, so you move the set each week too. This technically works — until you forget to move the set, or until a holiday falls on a working day and the alarm fires when you shouldn't be there.
Option 2: One alarm that follows the rotation
The proper solution is an alarm app that understands your rotation pattern. ShiftAlarm has a built-in 4-on-2-off template that handles this in one alarm. Here's the setup:
Step 1: Install ShiftAlarm
Get it from the App Store: apps.apple.com/app/id6808283069
Step 2: Create a Shift Work alarm
Tap the + button on the home screen and choose Shift Work as the alarm type. Don't pick Standard — that's the same as the built-in Clock app.
Step 3: Select 4-on-2-off and set your start date
In the rotation templates, pick 4-on-2-off. Then set the rotation start date — this is the day your current 4-day block began. The alarm uses this to figure out every future work day, forever.
Step 4: Set your wake time
Enter the time you need to be up on working days. If your shift times vary (days vs nights), use the day/night rotation template instead.
Step 5: Turn on holiday skipping
Under More options, toggle Adapt to calendar on. This pulls public holiday data for your region — so if a holiday falls on a scheduled work day, the alarm stays quiet automatically.
Step 6: Save and forget it
That's it. One alarm. Every working day it fires. Every rest day it stays silent. Holidays too. No weekly toggling, no "did I move the alarms" panic on Sunday night.
What about day vs night shifts?
If your rotation alternates between day shifts and night shifts, use the Day/Night template instead of 4-on-2-off. You can set different wake times for days (e.g. 7 AM) vs nights (e.g. 5 PM / 5 AM wakeup for the next day). The alarm handles the crossover so you don't have to.
FAQ
Does the alarm fire in silent mode?
Yes. ShiftAlarm is built on iOS AlarmKit, which hands the alarm directly to the system clock. It fires in silent, Focus, and Standby modes.
What if my rotation changes?
Edit the alarm and update the rotation start date or template. All future occurrences recalculate instantly.
Which holiday calendars are supported?
US federal holidays, UK bank holidays, and most EU public holidays. Choose your region in the calendar view.
Stop toggling alarms every Sunday.
One alarm. Your entire 4-on-2-off rotation. Holidays included.
